So, even though the Death Ray is more of a frequency mangler, you can still actually dial in a cool fuzz tone… and I would say, most of the stable fuzz tones I was able to get reminded me of some Zvex fuzz factory type noises. So, the Z and A knobs work very interactively with each other, while the P knob is more like the volume knob.
This pedal really lets the beast loose once you plug in that expression pedal. I am using a Moog expression pedal, but it also works with a Roland EV5… just an FYI
The Expression pedal will control the Z knob, allowing you to mangle your signal on the fly. Almost makes me want to produce a score for a low budget, late 70s sci fi movie….. Night of the Comet maybe? Even though that was the 80s…. whatever. Anywho, you all know that I like the weird ones and this one is certainly weird. Matt over at Idiot Box sure does make some wonderfully weird boxes of rock. I celebrate all of his pedals… I put them in a little circle and I do a little dance around them late at night sometimes
From the Idiot Box website:
The Death Ray Frequency Mangler is AWESOME! Its like plugging your guitar into a fuzzed out Atari. This pedal can go from a high filtered squelchy fuzz to a low buzzed out bit crushy mess! The -Z knob controls the main pitch of the square wave divider while the -A knob kind of slews the pitch so to speak. With the -A knob on full blast the -Z knob gives more of what you would think a square wave filtered fuzz would sound like, where if you back off on the -A knob you can get all kinds of rad lo-fi tracking blip outs when you let notes ring out! This sucker can get loud as balls and the -P knob keeps that under control. But what makes this pedal my absolute favorite is the expression pedal input. Take control of the -Z knob with foot control for killer synthy tone sweeps! Crazy fun!!!
4.7″ x 3.7″ x 1.18″ enclosure, true bypass switching, common 9v center negative BOSS style power input and battery snap.
